Interview: Mista Dre – Rising Comic Takes Center Stage
The Journey to Comedy Stardom
Mista Dre is an Event Host, Broadcaster and a rising Comic set to embark on a series of headline shows that promise laughter, storytelling, and unforgettable entertainment. Drawing from his experiences as an immigrant and his journey in the comedy world, Dre’s performances blend satirical humour with spontaneous fun, offering something for everyone.
His upcoming “Up and Comedy” shows will take place in three cities:
– Ottawa: Sunday, October 6 at LIVE! on Elgin
– Waterloo: Thursday, October 17 at Kitchener-Waterloo Little Theatre
– Toronto: Friday, October 18 at Ruumors Resto-Lounge
As Dre steps into the spotlight with his first headline shows, and as someone I have listened to and seen grow through the BCC community, I’m excited for you to get to know him– read on to find out why these shows are a must-see.
SJ: Okay, Dre, let’s talk about your journey, how did you get started with your comedy, and what brought you to where you are today.
MD: “Comedy has always been a part of me in some way. From filming funny sketches in university to having humour and spontaneity as part of my skill set when I began hosting events, to even producing my comedy shows with featured headliners. Ultimately, two things pushed me into stand-up comedy completely: Not having a hosting gig during the pandemic made me realize I depended on external factors and clients to get on a stage or in front of an audience. Secondly, the need to evolve career-wise and as an individual to be the best version of myself was the deciding factor. That has been the journey for the last two years – of growth, love, anxiety, fear, and small but giant wins.”
SJ: Your first headline show tour is generating a lot of buzz. Where are you performing, and why did you pick those cities?
MD: “It’s not a tour, please. Think of it like I’m moving from Montreal to London and these are cities I will pass by on the way there, so I’m taking the scenic route. But these cities are very specific for different reasons. I’ve performed in Ottawa a few times as a supporting act but never in front of people who came out specifically to see me. So I feel the need to right that. Waterloo has had a big impact on me in 2024 and I feel we’ve bonded well, so I’m doubling down on that energy. Can’t do a headline show in Ontario and not do a Toronto show after having to prove myself again and again in the city, plus I owe Toronto a huge one.”
SJ: This tour seems like a significant milestone, how long have you been preparing for your headline show, and what obstacles did you face?
MD: “I’ve always wanted to do a headline show since my last show in October 2023 because I felt like that’s when people start to take you a bit more seriously, or maybe that’s just me. Adding Ottawa and Kitchener is in part credited to two people who pushed me to do so – Sam of Afrochrome Magazine and Peter Pelosia of Digimillennials. Thank you for going all in for me on this show.
The biggest challenge was convincing myself mentally that I could do this and that people would come to see me do comedy. The mental work began in March, but I have my team to thank for getting me through – (Chemsi, Imina, Naza, and Mel) and a few close friends who knew what I was going through at the time. I’d like to thank Igos, Flo, and Rich White for the unhinged words of affirmation. Another challenge I faced was balancing my work with trying to plan the show. It was not an easy act to balance, but we pulled through. To get here, I had to choose myself time and time again and say no to some opportunities this year. Lastly, and most shockingly, was booking a venue. Ahh, Toronto venues showed me SHEGE (a tough time)! I knew exactly what I wanted because the show is meant to be an intimate event, but I was having a serious issue securing a venue. I have a lot to say about that, but for now, shout out to Ruumors Resto Lounge for giving my show a home in Toronto.”
SJ: For anyone who might be new to your comedy, how would you describe your comedy style, and what can new audiences expect from your shows?
MD: “I’m a storyteller and I draw from my experiences as an immigrant, having lived in Nigeria and here in Canada, and done a little bit of travelling. I truly believe there’s something for everyone in my set. I think my style is satirical and spontaneous; my jokes are fun, expressive, and light-hearted. Expect a good time from start to finish as we have an amazing lineup for you. Oh, I might try motivational speaking too, so bring an offering and tithe.”
SJ: You know, comedy can be a tough industry. How have your supporters helped you in your comedy career, and what would you like to tell them?
MD: “Tough is an understatement. Being a comic is challenging because your job is to make people laugh. Then you get tough love from your peers, if any when you’re an outsider. I needed their support because in my head I quit about 15 times, including the day I announced the show. But a huge thank you to all of them. Can I give a special shout-out to Courtney for showing up to almost all my comedy gigs and open mics just to encourage me and prove that people would come out to a Dre show? Although I’m excited, the work has just begun, so I am calling on everyone to support your boy. I promise, one cold malt for you all after the show.”
SJ: As creators the way we brand ourselves especially online, posters etc is important. The creative design for your tour announcement is quite eye-catching. What inspired your tour announcement design, and how does it reflect your comedy style?
MD: “I didn’t think anyone would notice, but yes. The designs are very intentional on a personal level because as much as I’m ready, I’m still figuring things out as we go, and I want you to join me on this chaotic but most definitely fun adventure. On a design level, I want the audience to feel safe, believe they are going to have fun, and know it’s supposed to be a stress-free event. So please leave your problems at home. Shout out to my photographer Justin and the Design team at Digimillennials.”
SJ: And at last, As you gear up for this tour, how are you promoting your shows and getting people excited to attend?
MD: “MobToronto is my first stop. Thank you for the feature. I’ll also be enlisting a few veterans in the strategy business to help me because I need everyone and their cousins to support and push this show. I am trying to be the first comedian from my village to tour Canada successfully. We have some cool ideas, and hopefully, you’ll think they’re cool enough to get you to buy a ticket to the show in one of the three cities.”
Thank you for this conversation and I look forward to seeing you in October when you’re back in the 6ix!
