Elvira Kurt Headlines Comedy Show In Support of Marginalized Comedians
Friday, January 19th 2018 at University of Toronto
Following a series of inflammatory comments made in 2016 by University of Toronto professor, Jordan Peterson, the university has been host to a disturbing rise in alt-right activism and events. Students have taken their protests against the movement to the streets and some are now taking it to the stage, as they fight hate on campus with humor.
PUNDIT, is a student-run comedy show with a professional lineup of minority comics whose identities are all too often made punchlines by alt-right rhetoric. Hosted by U of T based non-profit OPIRG Toronto and LGBTQIA+ student group VicPride, PUNDIT presents a platform for marginalized comedians to take a no-holds-barred approach to politics and perspectives as they jest about their unique and relatable experiences.
PUNDIT premieres on Friday, January 19 at 9:00pm at The Cat’s Eye student lounge at the University of Toronto. The show’s headliner is Elvira Kurt (Baroness Von Sketch Show, Just for Laughs, Comedy Now, The Debaters, PopCultured) and features a diverse array of Canada’s finest comics including; DJ Mausner (winner of Just for Laughs’ Home Grown Comics competition 2017), Jordan Foisy (Just for Laughs, Vice), Brandon Ash Mohammed (TVO, Vice) Danish Anwar (Winnipeg Comedy Festival, CBC Laugh Out Loud, The Debaters) and is hosted by local comic, Sam Feldman (MTV, JFL42).
Admittance is pay-what-you-can, though the event page advertises that “nobody will be turned away for lack of funds!” Attendees are asked to reserve their passes at opirgtoronto.yapsody.com in advance as space is limited.
